SEPTEMBER 2023 - Uncommon/Rare species identifie3d this month

Well not so many, surprisingly as this is getting into prime time fungi growth season. A good reason is that I was on holiday for two weeks, followed by a week off due to catching every disease that you can catch on a long haul flight, except Covid! Well that's what the test said. In the early part of the month I did manage to find a few little gems here and there, so describe these here.

At Cirencester Park I found Amphinema byssoides on unusually Sweet Chestnut. This showing the many cylindrical blunted apex cystidia to help with the ID. 3rd record for Gloucs but not that uncommon elsewhere. A short trip to small part of Brimpsfield where a stream follows a footpath but in a very hot part of the month, I felt it highly unlikely to find anything. Fortunately, due no doubt to the stream existing still creating sufficient humidity for finding a large cluster of Candolleomyces leucotephrus with Fagus. Back to my visit to Cir. Park I came across a large scattering of a low lying Collybia type agarics which had a distinct foul smell such as rotting vegetables. Not realising at the time this was Cabbage Parachute or Gymnopus brassicolens - so aptly named. Nearby, a Ramaria species showed itself with Albies alba with small isolated patches on soil. Careful examination and showing ornamentation to the spores (spiny) the spore size matched Phaeoclavulina curta quite easily. New for County. Lastly, at a new location at Bulburrow Woods which is located well north of the county on Fagus, I found a small patch of a Tomentella species, this one working out to be a NEW SPECIES for the UK, pending DNA tests one day! The warted spores and size, green cells in KOH, and simple septa strongly pointed to Tormentella brunneofirma. Keyed out also in Elia Martini and Frank Dammrich Tormentella article. So short list, but still some wonderful species that keep on jumping out at me. :-)
